Well, first off, Cocoon isn't dead. :)
Cocoon is using the Excalibur Component Manager (ECM) which is maintained in the new Excalibur project (http://excalibur.apache.org).
There was some initial work done on moving Cocoon to Merlin but I believe the Cocoon community has decided to develop their own component framework. Until then they will continue to use ECM. Since ECM is still actively supported by the Excalibur project, I don't think there is any reason to worry about Cocoon.
If you have additional questions, you may want to ask the Excalibur project or the Cocoon project.
