Ok, thanks - that's a better workaround.
So this one works with CDH3:
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/avro/avro-mapred/1.7.3/avro-mapred-1.7.3-hadoop1.jar
But this one doesn't:
http://apache.claz.org/avro/avro-1.7.3/java/avro-mapred-1.7.3-hadoop1.jar
