Around the time AVRO-1241 was committed I experimented with using this
technique in Utf8.toString(). I built a thread-safe version but was unable to
achieve significant performance advantages.
Improvements in string performance may be possible and would be wonderful to
have so I encourage folks to continue to look for them! Please also submit
benchmark results with any performance-related patches.
