This reverses an optimization made in AVRO-753.
Can you please provide benchmark output demonstrating the performance
improvement? The output from Perf.java before and after this change should be
sufficient. We probably care most about performance on 64-bit Linux using
Sun's Java 7 JVM, but benchmarks on other platforms would also be useful.
