I agree. I proposed the javax.json API for this, the standard Java API for
immutable JSON data. We could use generic instead, although I slightly prefer
something more standard and unchanging. We might change the generic API and it
would be better if that only affected applications that use generic data and
didn't also force all code that touches default values to also change.
Note that default values don't need to have distinct, named types at runtime.
For example, we could use Map<String,Object> for both records and maps, and
String for both strings and enum symbols. Something like this might be a
better choice than generic.
