Sean Mackrory commented on BIGTOP-1016:
---------------------------------------
>From a technical standpoint, I can confirm your suggestion that the packaging
>code will be very easy to forward-port, although there are some aspects like
>the /usr/bin/sqoop script and directories that will need to either be renamed
>in one or both of the packages, or they'll need to conflict.
Personally I think I'd prefer to take the same route we have with Hadoop:
Because of an end-user need for continued released based on a older component
that was more stable, new major versions stayed on the bleeding edge and work
was done on subsequent releases in the 0.3.x line. Of course, since Hadoop is
seen as the "kernel" of this distribution, I would agree that case is a bit
different. Consequently, I don't feel that strongly on the issue if the general
consensus is to ship both versions concurrently.
> Add a new package to bring back Sqoop 1.4.x

> While I understand the motivation behind moving on with Sqoop2 based
> releases (I was part of the 1.99.2 release) Sqoop 1.99.x is an evolving
> preview release and I think it would make it easier for Sqoop users if
> we have both Sqoop2 and Sqoop 1.x available until there is some more
> feature parity. It may be a specific situation with Sqoop project alone
> with two releases actively being developed.
> I would propose this if there is an update.
> {quote}
> If this is generally agreeable, it seems straightforward to port the Sqoop
> 1.4.x based package from Bigtop 0.5 to trunk, perhaps as a new "sqoop1"
> package.
