UPDATE
1) in order to unify, we need to make itest build via gradle, and then call
that gradle task from smoke tests. so im working that angle now.
2) after that we need to migrate all the groovy files from test-artifacts into
a (hopefully less nested and simpler) directory that is under a common subdir
w/ smoke test tests.
