Hi @geomacy - have added another commit to #573 ; hadn't realized other
inheritance semantics re catalog item id. It now has tests and several
explicit TODO comments which this PR should look at. If you've done this right
all those TODOs should be resolved or trivially resolvable, but there were
quite a few so I marked anything that might be able to fall through the cracks.
