thanks @Nakomis - all fixed. some hairiness fixing the cluster failing

. (@aledsage i'd appreciate if you could have a look at that too. it is one
of the unpleasantness of trying to give right semantics when supporting method
calls and task trees, but i think the now-default behaviour is about right.)
@Nakomis the sample project test failures are not showing with these fixes,
but i'm not sure what could have caused them or fixed them. (the trace
truncates some rather important information about `NoSuchMethod`!) could they
have been an IDE problem? i get a clean build now so not worried, just thought
i'd flag it.
