Re generics -- your intuition is spot on. There were relatively few places
we had to add the correctly-generically-typed interface methods and trivial
casting-super override methods and `@SuppressWarnings`; this is a small price
to pay to remove the complex generics. Both `PublicSelfType` and
`InternalSelfType` are now gone.
