I humbly switch my initial vote to a -1 as well.

There are a few issues in
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CALCITE-1254<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CALCITE-1254>
that make it difficult to upgrade Calcite to the new Avatica. The problems aren’t
terrible, but the API and protocol changes would be difficult to fix once we release
them. We don’t need to fix them all, but I think Josh should consider them.

Downloaded, checked keys, checked L+N, built under JDK 1.7 and 1.8 on Ubuntu
Linux, ran tests, built javadoc.
In my opinion, it would be nice if there were a README file saying “you have
downloaded avatica version 1.8; the release notes are in file xxx”. But by no
means a show-stopper.
