Thanks for checking.  I did resolve it (the same way you mention above):

BTW, my Windows configuration uses:
  Putty version 0.53b
  WinCVS version 1.2.0

Perhapse we should collect the fragments of knowledge from all the various
sources into one coherent wiki page?
