I agree with you that it is not a good logo (I said as much quite some time
ago), but this is what we called "the new logo" in all recent conversations,
with M&P and "Trademarks".

Yes.  And that would mean that "Commons" doesn't have a logo, because
the oak leaf is the ASF's logo.

I commented that it should not be too hard to come up with an updated logo
(i.e. something graphically simple but somewhat more than plain text).[1]

Yes; that's the misleading situation which "Trademarks" has indicated must
be corrected.

[1] By coincidence, I fiddled with the idea a couple of days ago, towards the
next opportunity for upgrading the logos of the math-related components so
that they won't display the feather anymore.
I could suggest that the "Commons" graphical item of those components
becomes the logo of the project itself (as it was the case on the "logos" page
of the ASF referred to in my previous post). I'll attach it to
  https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMMONSSITE-179
and we can further discuss it there.
