This is what JS I ended up using:
dch@hammurabi bin % ldd couchjs | grep moz
libmozjs.so.2d => /usr/lib/libmozjs.so.2d (0x00007f90be8ff000)
dch@hammurabi bin % strings /usr/lib/libmozjs.so.2d | grep 1.8
JavaScript-C 1.8.0 pre-release 1 2007-10-03
It matches the installing_on_debian page on the wiki coz I wrote it
after doing that setup.
