Javier Candeira commented on COUCHDB-1863:
------------------------------------------
First of all, let me say that I agree "Documentation" should be front and
center, and that I only added "Learn & discuss" because I thought the current
consensus was not to lose the navigation metaphor.
Second, not to be difficult, but if someone is going to make the final
decision, let them make the final editing. Please use this as a suggested draft
and work on it, but I think editing on request is less practical than someone
with commit bit just jumping on it and doing their arrangement.
1. "Learn & discuss" is great! But can we capitalise "Discuss"?
It's not capitalised so it's clear that it's one section, not two. "Learn" was
the documentation, and "discuss" was the mailing lists.
"Docs and discussion" is too cute for being alliterative, it's longer and takes
more space in the header, and loses the verb-ness that "Download" and
"Contribute" have.
A solution could be to have my new section as a totally new internal link, and
make the new top bar look like this:
Intro Docs (internal link to my section) Contribute Mailing
lists Download More...
Or, sincerely, just have "Docs" at the top jump externally. If the metaphor
doesn't let you link to the docs directly, then it's the metaphor that should
go, not the link to the docs.
2. We've lost the Mailing List link from the header. Thoughts on that?
That was the "discuss" part.
3. The bolding should be reworked so that you can read only the bold text and
it gives you a nice high-level summary. Check the other sections for how this
works!
The current style of the site is good for Google, ie for SEO, but difficult to
scan for humans: it requires actual reading, even with the selective bolding.
That's just my opinion. In any case, I repeat that I respectfully think someone
else should take this as a first draft and do the final commit, not me.
4. Can you reword "CouchDB eye for the SQL guy (or gal)" to something a bit
more idiomatic? (The gendered language would have to be dropped either way.)
Sure, I knew this pop culture reference would be controversial. My first
version had "CouchDB eye for the SQL person", which lost the rhyme, the
reference to the TV program, and the humour. If "guy (or gal)" is not
considered non-gendered enough, or the TV reference is considered too obscure,
or whatever, please change it, I'm in no way married to a joke attempt that
falls flat.
