Hi Julian et all, sorry for joining the party a bit late. My name is Michael Kaufmann and I'm doing a PhD at IBM Research Zurich in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. I've been with IBM Research for many years, starting as hardware, firmware and software engineer for the Blue Gene/Q super computer and since then I've worked on a few other high performance network and distributed I/O systems. In general, I really like large distributed and high-performance systems. Crail is also my first Apache project.
These days I'm working on accelerating the I/O part of machine learning applications using Crail so I'm not so much involved in the Crail core but at the outskirts, where Crail meets the application. Aside from that I'm working on improving the scheduling of (heterogeneous) distributed applications (for now mostly Spark applications) on heterogeneous clusters, i.e. clusters with different types of nodes. This is currently independent of Crail but I'd like to connect both of them in the future. Has everyone been added to the dev list? If so, I suggest that we kick off incubation with a group discussion. First, can everyone reply to this message, introducing themselves. Next, let’s discuss the incubation process, what it means to be an Apache project, and some goals to achieve over the next few months. This is a great chance to ask questions of your mentors. One of the first things to learn about Apache is that (pretty much) everything happens on the dev list. A vibrant project always has chatter on the dev list, and the active members of the project are participating in this discussions. So, consider this practice. Let me begin. I’m Julian Hyde. I live in Berkeley California and work for Hortonworks. My first Apache project was Calcite, which graduated about 2 years ago. I’m a database developer, and have been doing open source projects since about 2001. Luciano asked me to be a member because of my interest in memory-oriented data processing; for instance, I am a PMC member of Apache Arrow. Julian
