I strongly suspect that my Java install doesn't work right. I've had a lot of trouble trying to get HSQLDB working. Incidentally, I'd like to see if there's a reasonable way to use Base for people who have issues with Java, or who are indistros or OS's that don't ship Java. Since the Java license is not friendly to Linux distros who aren't companies.
