We at Exalon Delft completely agree with Andrew:
- we would never have considered to use OpenOffice without a database
application
- the fact that HSQL is slow doesn't harm us, we want to use it as a
front end to Postgresql (so maintaining the database from Base) and
build applications with it. A lot needs to be done to Base to beat MS
Access (think of MS A's simple macros, using forms as dialogs to filter
other forms, switchboards etc), and a lot can already be done with Base
as it is now.
That said: knowing Base exists, Writer's compatibility with Word was
paramount. Then discovering OO can do so much more / better then Office
(signatures allow us to electronically sign documents (instead of
signing, scanning and pdf'ing), pdf export, svg import (using a plugin)
- Calc's being able to analyze database queries - YEAH. Could be more
integrated of course: how about filtering from Calc using spreadsheet
fields, or entering data in Calc and adding that to the database with a
click (so using Calc as frontend to Base tables).
Now I'm dreaming on: why not using a OO as a platform to build Office
applications (I mean simple user applications like time registration,
simple ERP functions for those of us who can't afford SAP etc), the
Basic language makes a portable programming platform that can easily
beat .NET (look at .NET run time memory footprint, not that much better
then OO as a whole). Why not compile the OO Basic code to get good
performance and really replace .NET and Windows (in the longer run) for
user app's, tray applets.
Every way I look at it, Base is an essential part to store, filter and
recombine large amounts of data needed by the other applications.
This is for the programmers: thanks, we really appreciate what you are
doing!

Hi,
If I may be so bold - this email is not intended for anyone that
writes code - it is intended for your boss, but I don't know who that
is. To be sure I am understood, I am not expecting a response from any
developers on this - this is not your job. But I would hope someone
forwards this to the appropriate person.
So "Where is Base?", What does that mean exactly.
Look at this page:

Where is Base?
Today I took a few hours and went through a good number of the
presentations from OOoCon, found at the main website and watched a
couple of videos of the conference session.
Where was Base?
Lots of stuff on Writer, Calc and Impress but Base is just missing in
action. This when the most exciting new piece of functionality is
released in the two years since Bases debut, almost simultaneously
with the conference.
It was mentioned in Louis Suarez-Potts opening remarks, and even he
got it wrong saying that the Sun Report Builder would be part of the
exciting 3.0 release. That was it, I did not even see the word
anywhere else - of course I didn't go trough every video or every
presentation, but a good number of them.
OK, there was a screen shot showing that a data aware table grid
control can be included in a dialog box using StarBasic, in the last
session of the last day.
Respectfully
