Another thing to consider is using Spring xml namespace support. For example:
http://directory.apache.org/schema/apache-directory-configuration-2.0.0 http://directory.apache.org/schema/apache-directory-configuration-2.0.0.xsd It can get hairy unit testing massive graphs without Spring or an IOC container. Seems to me the core of the issue is that the server is not broken down into simple contexts that build upon each other. With that it should only take a few minutes to isolate an issue.
