Bob Hehmann commented on DIRSERVER-1816:
----------------------------------------

Wrap up - I truly appreciate your candor. I didn't quite realize the testing
difficulty. I pretty much assume some level of automated testing across the
board these days - a flawed assumption on reflection. That is an awfully
complex bit of kit to try to test by hand!

QA issues like this seem actually to be happening increasingly across the
board. I deal a lot in overall system integration, so tools like Java, Apache
DS, and Tomcat are supporting elements to higher level tools such as Atlassian
products (JIRA, Confluence, ...) and IBM/Rational (Jazz...). These in turn are
just parts of overall toolkits supporting PMO and lifecycle for extremely large
application systems, plus those applications directly. Systems such as
Healthcare Line-Of-Business automation e.g. State Medicaid and commercial
Health Insurance systems. Some of these are open source, some like Atlassian
commercial but heavily open-source inspired, and some are pure old-fashioned
closed source. And all of them have seemed to suffer recently from
disconcerting QA failures at a more basic level than I'd like to see as a
member of a corporate culture. It seems as if the pressure to release quickly,
the complex stacks, and the economics are no longer quite in balance.

Best wishes, and Cheers,

Bob Hehmann
