If I can help here with my OOo memory, moving from CA to JCA has took more that one year. Moving to no licence to PDL has took about 2 years, moving to outsource OLH has took more than 2 years but it's not still possible to contribute to it so pleas guys, be patient and confident, the most important is that the the willing is here :-)

while it's okay to blame the Sun for some of those shadows, let me
emphasize that actually *is* possibke to contribute to the application
help (as we discussed to call it to avoid the confusing term "online
help").

There is a fairly extensive document that describes how it works
and how one can go to work on it:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/online_help/techdetails.html

I do admit, thought, that we were doing a bad job in promoting that
and that we still need to tweak the actual process. If you are
willing to help, contact us through the online_help mailing
list (or this one). We all need to learn what the best practice for
working in the help would be. It will be different than working
on a book since the help is part of the code base CVS and
modularily and non-linearly organized.

here are some alternative ways
- propose helping on freeing the existing one

I hear ya and I keep nagging, I promise.

- provide translation of code source of the devGuide on the wiki into new languages (Basic, Python) in our own licence provided we're allowed to ...some info on this ?

you're always allowed to provide new material on another licence. The concern is how this will be integrated, and how this will be interacting with the already existing material. From what I remember of all the discussions about the dev guide, this came out about adding new articles or rewriting existing articles. The purpose was not about rewriting from scratch.

My understanding was that rewriting from scratch was the
actual proposal. Expanding existing topics or trabslating
from one programming language to another would actually a very good
thing to be done while the open source process is still
underway.
