The problem with the specific list I used as an example appears to not be the
HTML tags, but the embedded code. When I tried a different list (without
code), it worked fine with either # symbols or HTML tags within the Note.

I'll keep stumbling on, and see what else happens. I'm learning a lot here,
slowly, after messing up various pages in the interim. ;-)
