Thanks Steve, Brock. I see the value in this approach - let's go with it.
Steve - you don't need to make patches for all branches - just rebase your
patch on trunk so I can commit to trunk. I will back port to the other
branches, since it looks like your patch should apply cleanly on other branches
if it applies on trunk.
