These seem like two separate issues.
The first issue is not really a problem - that is the standard behaviour of the
browser when using the local filesystem. When the built site is deployed to a
webserver, it would work properly.

Description:
When creating a static html site (running command "forrest")
links in the document that point to a directory (index.html)
are broken when using the site without a server (file://)
To fix: add the filename to the links, i.e.
create <a href="../chapter1/index.html">
instead of <a href="../chapter1/">
