I don't see how to do that sanely. You could send the AJAX requests
from a form on https://freemarker.apache.org/try.html to the VM (with
the help of some CORS headers). But it's a pain, as then you have to
deploy new versions to two places (or proxy the HTML from the VM...)
Also, you still should use HTTPS for the AJAX requests, so you still
need to install a certificate there.

It's all static HTML. We just use Google Custom Search.
