We're definitely missing something and I'm still trying to figure out what it is. The correct way to setup Hipchat is the way it is done for ASF INFRA: https://www.hipchat.com/g7itl962x
This doesn't require logins, etc. Ours seems to be behind the registration wall (the "misconfiguration" you're seeing is because you haven't been invited and registered).
