Not sure how creating a tar.gz makes it easier, given unzip is provided with most Linux distros (like RHEL, Fedora, SLED/SELS, openSUSE, ....), on MacOSX and most Unix distros (though maybe as an optional package, like on AIX.)

I'd prefer staying with zipfiles only.

Hi Tim,

We should at least have a tar.gz distribution corresponding to geronimo-eclipse-plugin-xxx-deployable.zip so that it is easy for linux users who want to do a manual installation of GEP.

Hi Vamsi, I've opened a new feature JIRA to determine if it makes
sense to actually release a tar.gz artifact. As far as I know, the
Eclipse update sites only handle zipfiles, so I'm not comfortable at
this time releasing a tar.gz artifact for GEP 2.1.0. <http://2.1.0.>
However, we shall determine the implications for the next GEP
release, and if reasonable will do so. Thanks for the suggestion

To add on, I would love to see these tar.gz distributions in GEP
2.1.0 release itself if adding these does not amount to a lot of
        work.
