I think they handle the transient messages that way so they can run a combiner
on messages incoming to the same partition on the same worker from the sending
and receiving end to save space on both?
Either way, I'd be happy to run a patch you're happy with (let me know) on a
cluster, with the metrics, and see what it looks like if you want.
