I have noted something else I need to raise a query on: ~/.gradle/ cache
holds information about resolutions as well as the jar cache. Is it
necessary to keep the entire resolution history as seems to be the case now, or is there a way of trimming this automatically. The problem here is not so much the disc space per se (the files are all very small), the
problem is the potentially huge number of files (again unbounded) in a
single directory. There is a finite limit to the number of files that
can be stored in a directory but I accept this is unlikely to be
reached. Really I am just worrying about tidiness and removing unneeded
clutter.

This is a very valid point. The cache is managed by Ivy, so I have to ask on the Ivy list about this issue.
