We are currently do something very similar for our project (for developing IDEA and TeamCity plugins) and it's working out nicely. The 'plugins' directory provides a place for a build.gradle that contains common stuff for all plugins.

BTW: I know Mike added a task to his list this morning to split the gradle-ui stuff into a separate module after we saw you had done this. He was excited!
Cool. I'm really looking forward to shipping Gradle 0.8 with the UI. And I guess having this structure makes it also easier to maintain forks.
