yep, agreed generally, but mind sunyinan's specific use case (low-power MID). While cheap downscaling is possible for JPEG (but only up to 1/8 of the orig size, after that you also need to interpolate by hand), PNG/BMP/TIFF are not so easy (though certainly cheaper to throw away information early there). Another thing to keep in mind is that downsampling without proper lowpass-filtering leads to aliasing artifacts, this is especially apparent for line art etc. and good filtering necessarily requires reading *every* input pixel. That said, it's surely worth investing there first and check if load performance is acceptable already on the MID. Then again, as long as storing that extra picture version(s) is optional, why not?
