It depends where you are and whether you are connecting to HTTP sites or HTTPS
sites. In countries where all network traffic is monitored, for example,
connecting to an HTTPS proxy outside of the use of HTTP CONNECT is very useful.
This is actually a reality for almost 2 billion people around the world, so
certainly not an edge case.
HttpClient also clearly already supports this to some extent -- again that
initial connection to an SSL proxy works fine, just not the redirect.
