I've pushed the [latest 
version|https://github.com/rschmitt/httpcomponents-core/commit/reactive] of 
this contribution. After the latest round of revisions, everything is running 
pretty nicely. The main questions still to be resolved are the finer points of 
exception handling and connection management that I mentioned above.
