Thanks for finding the reason for this Brock! I think the ATSHook contents should be shimmed (in trunk) so that it is not excluded from a hadoop-1 build. (Or maybe, we should start surveying if people are still using newer versions of hive on Hadoop 1.x).
I also ran a few simple queries using the RC in a single node cluster and everything looked good.
