Nice research!
I don't think hive-default.xml is used anymore, the only reference to it in the
code is to warn about it's existence:

[~cwsteinbach], do you know we maintain three locations for each parameter:
# hive-default.xml.template
# HIveConf
# Wiki
It seems liked it would be nice to doc the conf values in HiveConf and then
have a main method which generates the syntax needed for the wiki.
