Sure, you can do that. But in that case, you really do need to make absolutely sure that every mirror works every time. What I have implemented allows the user to gracefully fallback to a working mirror.

So go for it. All you need to do is implement a monitoring system for mirrors, and then your proposed shtml page. I agree it would be superior to what I have done.

Until you do that, my system is better than what we have been using.
