It is true that mod_proxy is complex, but partly this is because it has
many features, so I think we need to differentiate here:

Reminds me of the delta between mod_tls and mod_ssl, one trivial module which
lets openssl (or gnutls or whatever) do what they do well, and the other where
we stick our fingers into every corner of the protocol.

Suggesting one or the other is "right" seems besides the point.
