What do you mean by distro-independent mime-stuff? If this is the
shared-mime-info stuff it is OK for me, but I for myself don't like the
idea to install legacy mime-info/*.keys & info with the freedesktop-menu
package. (The whole point of this package is to get rid of these)

Since these are just names,... What should those packages contain (a
filelist would be handy) and where should the things contained be
installed to?

I have no objections against the desktop-icons package if it
would only contain the icons in /usr/share/icons - but as the suse-menus
package conatins /opt/gome/share/icons and /opt/kde3/share/icons...

To sum-it up: I'm sceptical about this. If issue 46530 is not solvable
for OOo 2.0 I vote against it no matter what they contain since
identifying the relocatable/base packages will be impossible and thus
lead to unnecessary installation errors.

I'm also sceptical about the benefit. Esp. The size-issue doesn't seem
to be worth the effort. (you don't need to include them in the tarball).

The maintainance issue is clearer, but I think the effort is mainly in
creating the makefile-magic for each package? You basically do the same
things for each of the menu-packages - That's why I took another
approach with the freedesktop-package (take the results of the red-hat
package as a basis to finalize the package)

So I suggest having a "master" makefile that does all the makefile stuff
and let the menu-packages (spec-files) assemble the package (similar to
the way the freedesktop-package is created - take the "master tree" and
remove everything you don't need)

This is about the same effort that you'll have with seperate
desktop-icons and mime-data packages (maybe even less)

ciao
Christian

PS:
Is is really not possible to put the menu-packages into a subfolder of
the release-tarball?

Or was this the typical "ahh, enhancement/feature -> lets reassign"
workflow? (I guess so since my comment was ignored obviously)
