[~tripod] I have attached an implementation which illustrate the approach I
proposed above.
It does filter properties on export, does not overwrite filtered out properties
(that's will be fine for us).
The patch is mostly untested and some unit tests break. I'll continue improving
that assuming it is not going in the wrong direction from your pov.
