Can someone volunteer to do the actual release steps?
1.8.0 release steps, for reference [1]. See also the recurring discussion about automating (more of) the release process [2].
If we could get some of the improvement items done *before* 1.8.1, it should hopefully reduce the effort required for the release quite a bit.
