Regarding using the System properties, I racked my brain and searched around but couldn't find a precedent. Pinged @nacx on IRC and he couldn't think of one either. I can look into a Guice-injected factory. Do you have a good example precedent in mind?
I'll try to get to these comments and the other PR comments tomorrow but I leave for Hong Kong on Wednesday and might not be able to get to everything right away.
