I assume taking this patch removes source compatibility with Java 6

Despite the fact that we have moved trunk onto Java 7 when we discussed that 
move in the community the consensus was that in the short term while any new 
Apache Jena releases would be compiled against Java 7 those who need Java 6 
could still download and build from source.  It sounds like taking this patch 
now would remove that possibility entirely, I am not advocating that we don't 
take the patch merely that we are fully aware of the implications of taking it.
