Agreed. But in the meantime, specifying the encoding gets stuff working.
Heck, I can even run the Maven build now.

It would be better to change the source file such that it's either
encoded in UTF8 or ascii with unicode escapes, so we don't have to
specify a non-default compiler encoding.
