I'm unfamiliar with Goldspike, so I will need some pointers to fixing
it :) Am I correct in assuming that it is responsible for managing
threads from a pool for Rails? And is it in the jruby trunk? If so,
should I make the fix to have it set the current instance or should I
leave that to someone else?

I'm looking forward to your updated diff. I would like to profile
it a bit on a few tests and see if the performance impact is as
minimal as I hope. Since it provides a general-purpose way to
detach/reattach objects, it would be generally useful. So the plan
for the moment is to go forward with it.
