OK - good to hear that it was an oversight not a conscious decision.
BTW: it might be a good idea to setup something in the build system to
check for signature changes in public APIs.
This would a) warn whenever an API change is committed and b) allow to
provide a list of API changes for non-backwards compatible releases;
