"when a page is published"
It sounds like you are adding incremental indexing to the publish
action. Will you be able to add a delay between a page being
published and the indexer starting?
Editors usualy create or edit several pages in one session, publishing
each page as they finish, and sometimes publish the same page multiple
times as they check the live version and tweak it. Hopefully
"incremental" indexing keeps the processing requirements low, but a
delay between publishing and reindexing can only help. The indexer
should be scheduled by the document publisher, and the scheduled start
time moved later every time another document is published. The delay
should be configurable (default to 30 minutes.)
Does the user have to wait for the indexer during publishing, or does
it run in the background? If someone publishes five pages, will the
indexer be started five times? What if several people publish
(hopefully different) documents at the same time? Scheduling the
indexer as a background task with a delay solves all of these issues.
I have been playing with the LuceneIndexTransformer and it is amazingly
fast. Waiting is not needed, as only the published page is indexed,
which takes between 0.6 and 0.8 seconds on my overloaded celeron
workstation. I do not think that this will be a problem, as there is no
complete rebuilding of the index involved.
