the all-in-one version of the previous patches with conflicts manually merged.
this is an accumulated version of the previous patches. since i created those
as orthogonal diffs against an unmodified tree, they won't apply cleanly
without manual intervention.. this one should work in one go.
please review asap and apply if there are no objections. i'm not sure
how long the patch will work without fuzz or rejects....
