Gentlemen,

May I suggest that before you remove that warning,
consider upgrading the documentation just a bit.

I've been struggling for weeks now to implement a
simple rework of the default authoring environment to
use CSS instead of tables, without success.

geeez. i hate the table stuff as much as the next guy, but to actually tackle that - respect. are you sure you know what you're getting into?

friendly advice: ignore the ugliness, it's just the authoring interface. you can still create beautiful, table-less websites in live. we should postpone that until after 2.0, since it's largely cosmetic. and it's a huuuuge undertaking, given how messy the styling is atm.

Whilst it's completely up to you folks, if you have a
bunch of new people using 2.0 without better
documentation, you should expect a flood of email help
requests.

well, from my p.o.v the documentation of 1.4 is at least on par with, if not better than, 1.2, after andreas' great efforts. but then i've already tackled the worst part of the lenya learning curve and beginners may see things differently.
what kind of documentation do you miss most?

as an aside, i don't think lenya 1.2 deployments will be any easier. on the contrary, customization is a lot cleaner and more intuitive with 2.0. the only (and important) argument to hang onto 1.2 is that it's proven in production and can at this point sustain higher loads (with careful tuning).

i'm thinking of putting a "getting started" kind of howto into the wiki, describing how to build, create a clean slate for succesful custom publications and do the necessary tweaks so that the server does not explode due to excessive caching and logging. would that help?

I'm happy to help rewrite parts of the wiki and
documentation, if I can ever figure things out myself
(no easy task if you're new to Lenya)!

granted. your comments on documentation deficiencies will be most welcome.

another piece of friendly advice: before you think about tackling a less-than-trivial job, tell people on the mailing list what you're up to and ask them to comment on your approach. lenya has a way of leading people up shit creek without a paddle - we're trying to remedy that by ruthlessly cleaning up the code base, but there are still some utterly confusing legacies left. when you try learning from the wrong piece of code, your life will be miserable.

regards, and thanks for sharing your thoughts,

jörn
