- what about Dutch "'s avonds" (i.e. "in the evening"), while "avonds" on
its own is not valid Dutch. Also, it's something that Dutch users often
make mistakes with. This is just one example.

- I think that in many languages such as English and Dutch expressions
such as "ad hoc" can be regarded as incorporated into the language; many
users don't even know it's originally Latin. And even if they do, it's not
really user friendly to require installing the Latin dictionary if the
user is writing normal "Dutch".

I think the most sensible approach is to have the spell checker accept the
words "ad" and "hoc" (in Dutch, English, etc) and to have a grammar
checker flagging an error if they don't occur together.
