---------------------------------- I just forward you this, maybe he can help: Greetings, I'm the Project Leader for the Fenno-Ugric Spellchecker project. Our team includes contributors such as the ispell-et maintainer and several proactive free software developers from the Linux Aktivaattori think tank. Our goal is to produce a GPL-licensed spellchecker to cover for the needs of Estonian, Finnish and other related languages from the Northern Baltic area. We are aware of commercial or closed-source engines for Estonian and Finnish, but the inherent problems related to this licensing scheme prevent people on non-x86 platforms from benefiting from them, hence our decision to develop our own spellchecking engine and to license it under the GPL. Our project could be of interest to Hungarian speakers as well, since their language is a close cousin of Fennic languages that shares a common grammar. We therefore gladly welcome Hungarian developers on our team, especially in the light of the mutual benefits that could result for our 3 countries, not just on linguistic and free software advocacy issues, but also by generally increasing collaborative work within the recently expanded EU. What we seek by joining this list touches on the following aspects: 1) Find OOo developers that could mentor us throughout our development process. 2) Attract interested Estonian, Finnish or Hungarian dvelopers to join our team. 3) Increase our awareness of similar projects for unrelated languages that could contribute some code fragments to get us started. What we can contribute back is relevant feedback on issues related to our languages (Linux Aktivaattori hosts to the GNOME-FI team, among other things, which brings a strong experience of localisation) and, in the long run, a new spellchecker backend to cover for Fenno-Ugric languages in MySpell/OpenOffice. Our mailing list's description text summarizes our goals best: "Started in May 2004, this project regroups people interested in developing a GPL-licensed spellchecking engine that catters to the specific needs of Fenno-Ugric languages for productivity tools such as Evolution and OpenOffice. Other issues of relevance include the creation and maintenance of dictionaries to be used by the spellchecker." Please understand also that ispell/myspell/aspell does not work in > Finnish (list of words). Finnish is too complicated language for that. > Speller have to be binary program like Soikko. I do not think, you really know myspell's possibilities. The Hungarian spellchecker is quite usable. It now has two level affix capability, that again greatly reduces the word count.
